National Farmworker Jobs Program

NFJP - Migrant & Seasonal Farmworkers Program

The National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP)  is a nationally directed program created by Congress in response to the chronic seasonal unemployment and underemployment experienced by migrant and seasonal farmworkers (MSFWs). The NFJP offers assistance that strengthens the ability of farmworkers and their families to achieve economic self-sufficiency. Since its inception with the passage of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, the farmworker program has been an integral part of the national workforce strategy.

The NFJP is currently authorized under section 167 of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 1998, and is a required partner of the local One-Stop delivery system.

What does the NFJP do for farmworkers?

The NFJP provides funding to assist migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families achieve economic self-sufficiency by providing supportive services to them while they work in agriculture or by assisting them to acquire new job skills in occupations offering better pay and a more stable employment outlook. Services include:

Core Services- skills assessment, job search, WIA program eligibility determination and access to the other core services of the Local One-Stop Center

Intensive Services- objective assessment, basic education and employment development planning achieved through a case management-based individual service strategy,

Training Services-objective assessment, basic education and employment development planning achieved through a case management-based individual service strategy,

Related Assistance Services-short-term forms of direct assistance to farmworkers and their families which supports their agricultural employment or their participation in an NFJP intensive or Training Services activity. Related Assistance is often a supportive payment that addresses an urgent need such as housing and food.

Intensive and Training Services enable farmworkers and family members to acquire skills that permit them to progress to other employment outside of farmwork or to upgraded employment within agriculture. The Related Assistance Services contribute to the stabilization of the farmworkers' continued employment in farmwork or support the farmworker during job training. Farmworkers access assistance through local One Stop Centers as well as the NFJP One-Stop partner.
